No. 20 (2022): The media and National Security

Portada del N° 20 de la revista Cuadernos de Trabajo: Los medios de comunicación y la seguridad nacional

In our Peru, civic education is deficient; there is a significant percentage of people who care very little about knowing the citizen's rules and even less complying with them, a situation that has been notorious in the month that closes the "year of strengthening national sovereignty" in which we have been violated by various sides, beginning by the authority responsible for directing –no less than– the National Defense System, and as a climax to his unfortunate tenure in the Executive Power, he violated democratic institutionality, declaring the unconstitutional dissolution of the Congress of the Republic, with the applause of thousands of Peruvians ill-educated who –mistakenly– went out to protest, asking for the closure of the national parliament and demanding another constitutional break, with the intention of establishing a new constitution, contrary to what our maximum norm indicates, and –in almost all cases– carrying out violent acts that fit with the crime of terrorism. Additionally, rulers of other countries raised their voices in support of the former ruler, in a clear interference in our internal affairs.

Faced with such evidence, the conduct of the press requires its direct interposition to guide the misplaced. Hence the importance of the media, in compliance with their constitutional responsibility. In our country there are more than a thousand media outlets and journalistic programs that should guide citizens so that they know the truth and thereby contribute to their education. Doing so places them in the place that corresponds to "the noble profession". In contrast, those who remain silent, look to the side against their obligation, or even encourage the misguided demonstration, simply get the label of being part of  the "vile job", which discredits his profession.
