Innovation and Rural Development in Southern Peru

In recent decades, highland rural agricultural development in Peru has taken a favorable turn thanks to a series of innovations that have enabled substantial changes both in production processes and in the transformation of products. The transition from shepherd to producer, supported in another important change which is transformation of the forage system, has allowed substantial increase of productivity and economic, social, and environmental sustainability as well, providing new opportunities for producers and spaces for development and participation for women. The main objective of this article is to describe how these changes have come about. To this end, a literature review on the theoretical foundations of innovation, as well as a case study of highland livestock farming, through highland rural agricultural projects, has been conducted.
